Michael Steiner

HHS 59ers:  It is with great sadness that we report the death of our classmate Dr. Michael (Mike) Steiner.  There will be a memorial service for Mike on the Outer Banks of North Carolina to be scheduled later.


MICHAEL LEE STEINER died June 24, 2016.  He was born on October 21, 1941, in Clarksburg, W.Va., to Amy Lee Grimm Steiner and Richard Kent Steiner. He was one of six children, Richard Kent Steiner II, Terrence Roy Steiner (deceased), Toni Lynn Steiner Trottier (deceased), Cristy Dean Steiner Farrell (deceased) and Kurt Eric Steiner. He was raised in Huntington and graduated from Huntington High School in 1959 and later graduated from Marshall University in 1963. This was followed by graduation from West Virginia University Medical School in 1967. An internship was done at Los Angeles County/USC Medical School, finishing in June of 1968. He entered the US Army in September 1968 serving until December of 1971. He had an honorable discharge as Major from the 25th Infantry Division and was brigade surgeon at time of discharge. He finished an ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia in 1975, and moved to North Carolina where he practiced ophthalmology until June 2016. His last residence was in Pinehurst, N.C. He is survived by his wife Donna Ford Steiner of Pinehurst and his daughter Samantha Steiner of Augusta, Ga. He was a semi-professional photographer and a computer nerd. He also greatly enjoyed cowboy action shooting. He attained an extra class ham radio license, a real estate broker's license and a US Coast Guard captain's license in his spare time. He started out as an Episcopalian but could be found in a Methodist or Presbyterian Church wherever the Lord could be found. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care located at 251 Campground Road, West End, NC 27376 or a charity of your choice .. Boles Funeral Home of Pinehurst is assisting the family. 
A memorial service will be held on the Outer Banks, N.C., in his memory at a date to be announced
