Robert (Bob) Spencer, Jr.

ROBERT E. SPENCER JR., 73, died at his home in Chesapeake, Virginia on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, from complications related to Parkinson's Disease. Bob was a 1959 graduate of Huntington High School and earned a Bachelor's degree in 1963 from Marshall University. He also earned an MBA in 1970 from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He enjoyed a rewarding career as a U.S. Navy flight officer as part of the crew of an E-2A Hawkeye. He served on active duty for seven years and spent another 16 years in the U.S. Navy Reserves, retiring with the rank of Commander. After leaving active duty and beginning service in the Reserves, he started a second career in banking in the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area. In the latter part of his career, he served as president of two banks, Bank of Isle of Wight in Smithfield and Citizens National Bank in Windsor. He retired in 2007. He was active in many civic groups and was also an integral part of the leadership of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Chesapeake, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary Frances McCaffrey Spencer and Robert E. Spencer, former owner of Spencer Jewelry and a former co-owner/operator of the Midway Drive-In. Bob is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Lora Spencer, formerly Lora Newman of Chesapeake, Ohio; his stepmother, Norma Jean Spencer of Concord, North Carolina; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Newman of Suffolk, Virginia; two brothers, Dana (and Kitty) Spencer of Belpre, Ohio and Greg Wright of Merritt Island, Florida; three sisters, Judy Spencer of Chesapeake, Virginia, Marcia Wright and Cheryl Wright, both of Charlotte, North Carolina; a daughter, Beth Spencer (and John) Grant of Hampton, Virginia; a son, Robert E. Spencer III of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina; and one granddaughter, Ruth Grant
