Florine Dooley

Florine Dooley

HHS’59ers: We have lost another of our Huntington High School classmates, Florine Dooley. Following is some of the highlights of Florine’s life:

Florine Dooley, 82, was born in Huntington on December 19, 1941 and died in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho on November 21, 2023. She began her education at Harveytown Elementary and then attended West Junior High School and was a proud graduate of the Huntington High School Class of 1959. Florine graduated from Marshall University and then moved to Charles Town, WV and then to Idaho to accept a job teaching school.

Florine purchased a travel agency and worked in the travel industry for several years. She worked with small non-profit groups maintaining their financial records and doing volunteer work. In October of 2023 Florine was honored with the second Bill Wassmuth Memorial Volunteer Award during the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations banquet in Coeur D’Alene.

Florine’s was an active supporter of the Civic Engagement Alliance, the Human Rights Education Institute, the Inland Northwest Opera and the Art on the Green organization. A friend of Florine posted that Florine wore many hats throughout her life as a trained chef, teacher, and lookout for the Forestry Department. The latter job provided her with a humorous story she loved to share. It came in the form of a little 1971 posting in the Sanders County Ledger newspaper:  “Miss Florine Dooley, a Sand Creek High School English teacher, is serving her third summer as a lookout, this summer she’s on Sex Peak (a fire tower). “And no remarks, comments Miss Dooley when the peak’s name is mentioned.”

Florine stayed in contact with many of her high school friends and her smile and wonderful sense of humor will be missed.
